Butterfield Paris 18th-century Solid Silver Sundial Ref. 1161
Butterfield portable sundial, Paris.
The octagonal dial is made of engraved solid silver and features a four-point compass. It is engraved with hour marks in Roman and Arabic numerals. The movable gnomon, featuring a bird, is engraved with scrollwork. The reverse side lists the latitudes of French and European cities; it is signed “Butterfield in Paris.” There are no hallmarks, but it has been tested with a touchstone.
Michael Butterfield (1635–1727) was a clockmaker of English origin who settled in Paris around 1663 and was appointed engineer to King Louis XIV. He worked for the court and founded a shop selling precision instruments under the name “Aux Armes d’Angleterre.”
Period: early 18th century.
Condition: As found; the case is original, made of black shagreen, and the interior is lined with green velvet (worn and faded); the case hinges are loose.
