Bishop's Pectoral Cross, Probably 18th Century; Malachite Inlay With Christ In Solid Silver
Bishop's Pectoral Cross, probably 18th century; malachite marquetry and Christ in solid silver; liturgical art
Authentic pectoral cross belonging to a high-ranking ecclesiastical dignitary—a bishop or abbot—from the period, most certainly the 18th century. A prestigious collector’s item, remarkable for its symbolism and the nobility of its materials.
Christ in solid silver (guaranteed). Superb carving and engraving, with great finesse in the anatomical details.
The structure is made of blackened hardwood, with the front entirely inlaid with genuine malachite marquetry—historically the heraldic and symbolic color of the episcopal office. Its ribbon-like hues offer magnificent reflections in the light.
The ends of the cross’s arms are adorned with ferrules and openwork metal finials in a floral style. The top is fitted with its original, sturdy suspension ring, designed to hold the ceremonial chain or silk cord.
The back is a very simple, flat, blackened wooden panel made of ebony—typical of pectoral crosses—so that it rests perfectly on the cassock without damaging the fabric.
In very good overall condition and magnificent for an object of this era.
Please note slight natural age-related cracks and minimal, discreet chips on the malachite plates, which is entirely normal for this semi-precious stone and attests to its authentic historical past
Total height 14.5 cm, width 10 cm
Cleaning recommended
