Auguste Allongé (Paris 1833–Bourron-Marlotte 1898)
Landscape with Trees Along a River
Watercolor on paper
35.5 x 27 cm (image size)
44 x 35 cm (frame)
Signed and dated lower right: Allongé 82
Good condition—very slight sun damage—modern frame/molding (some damage)
Auguste Allongé studied at the École Impériale des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1852. He was a student of Léon Cogniet and Ducornet. He received a medal in 1853.
A landscape painter, he taught drawing.
In 1873, he published a treatise on the technique of charcoal drawing, which was translated into several languages. Noting that charcoal was mostly used only for sketches, he sought to give this art form the polish and ambition of finished works. He was sensitive to the effects of light, replacing color with a very subtle study of tonal values.
Close to the Barbizon School, he was a member of Marlotte’s second group.
