Antique Savoie Muleteer Plaque, Joseph Antoine Jarsuel Rey, Les Chapelles 1870

An attractive and unusual French brass muleteer's plaque (plaque muletière), engraved with a military and heraldic composition featuring an eagle above crossed cannon, flags and trophies of arms.

The plaque bears the engraved inscription:

Research suggests that the rare surname Jarsuel Rey is associated with the commune of Les Chapelles in Savoie, in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, a region where mule transport remained of great importance throughout the nineteenth century.

Plaques of this type were mounted on the harnesses of mules and were both decorative and symbolic, often identifying the owner or celebrating local pride. The present example is particularly desirable as it is dated, named and retains its original hinged fitting.

A fine example of Alpine rural history, Savoyard folk art and nineteenth-century transport heritage from Savoie.
