Basket-shaped Travel Sewing Kit – Napoleonic III Period, 19th Century
A parlor sewing kit (or sewing box) in the shape of a small basket with removable handles, from the Napoleon III period (circa 1860–1870).
The exterior features Renaissance-inspired decoration, employing the Boulle marquetry technique. It is adorned with scrollwork, symmetrical foliage, and engraved brass volutes, set against a red tortoiseshell-effect background.
The basket is fitted with two movable handles made of bent wood, secured with brass rivets.
The interior of the lid, lined with its original midnight blue silk velvet, reveals an embroidery kit containing period tools:
- A pair of embroidery scissors with chiseled rings
- A gilded metal thimble
- A punch with a silver-plated metal handle
- A cylindrical bone (or ivory-like) needle holder
- A lace threader/hook
