Pierre Emile Lelong began drawing and painting at a very young age.
In the 1920s, he took classes at the Atelier Julien in Paris. He exhibited his works for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in 1935, and as a member of a group at the Galerie Rotg.
When World War II broke out, he became an officer and was taken prisoner at Dunkirk and sent to the Oflag camp near Dresden. He spent his time sketching his fellow prisoners and the events at the camp. After at least one failed escape attempt, he succeeded in 1942 and returned to France, where he transformed his sketches into a book, Une Vie de Camp (A Life in Camp), published in 1943. During this period (1943–45), he worked on his painting technique.
The Galerie Doucet organized a solo exhibition for Pierre Lelong in 1950. Subsequently, he exhibited with increasing frequency: the Salon d’Automne, the Salon de la Peinture à l’Eau (Watercolor Salon), the Salon des Indépendants, and the Salon du Dessin (Drawing Salon). His work became increasingly well-known, and in 1956, he was invited to paint a portrait of the composer Jacques Ibert. He also received commissions to paint frescoes for several institutional clients.
He exhibited at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps (Salon of Painters Witnessing Their Time) in 1963.
As abstract art gained popularity, he wrote articles defending figurative art, including "Why I Am Figurative".
He received the Grand Prix of the Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps in 1973 after a successful exhibition at the Galerie Minet. A retrospective of his work was held in Nice in 1974 at the Palais de la Méditerranée. His last major exhibition took place at the Galerie d’Art de la Place Beauvau in 1980, a series of works depicting the city of Paris. He died the following year in 1984.
