Large Buckle For A Traditional Costume Belt, Gilded Repoussé Metal — 19th Century
A large belt buckle consisting of two symmetrical parts joined by a central hook clasp.
It is made of non-ferrous metal, likely brass or gilded copper, richly embossed and engraved with foliage, shells, leaves, and radiating motifs. The highly elaborate decoration combines gilded reliefs with white metal appliqués, notably in the form of broad, stylized foliage.
The central section is adorned with red and green cabochons set with prongs—likely made of colored glass—arranged around a radiating motif. The ends and wings of the buckle are punctuated with small dark motifs in the shape of drops or palmettes.
The reverse features an antique construction of repoussé sheet metal, with wide loops designed to hold a fabric or leather belt, as well as an original central clasp.
This piece is likely of Eastern European origin or from the Ottoman/Balkan tradition, intended for a ceremonial or traditional women’s costume. It has a striking decorative presence and is a fine example of antique folk jewelry, comparable to 19th-century Greek, Albanian, Balkan, or Turkish pieces.
