Traditional Wooden Half-aune – Lace-maker – Folk Art – Auvergne
Late 19th century – Early 20th century
France, Auvergne, Haute-Loire, La Chaise-Dieu
A beautiful and rare folk half-aune made of carved hardwood from La Chaise-Dieu, an important lace-making town in Haute-Loire.
The object takes the form of a long wooden measuring ruler, 58.8 cm in length, corresponding to an old demi-aune used in local textile production. Two old notches visible on the edge appear to serve as measurement marks, attesting to its use for measuring fabrics, ribbons, or lace.
The main face is richly adorned with a remarkable geometric and symbolic design, entirely hand-carved. It features a checkered heart, several sun rosettes, star motifs, triangular friezes, and a spectacular interlaced pattern carved in relief. These elements are fully in keeping with the decorative vocabulary of Vellave folk art and attest to the care taken in crafting an object intended for everyday use.
The heart evokes themes of attachment and affection, while the sun rosettes and sun wheels are protective motifs widely found in the countryside of the Massif Central. The central interlacing, which is rarer, lends the piece a particularly elaborate decorative dimension.
Beyond its utilitarian function, this half-aune is a valuable testament to the textile activities for which La Chaise-Dieu and the Haute-Loire region are renowned. Measuring instruments were often personalized by their owners, transforming a simple work tool into a true work of folk art.
The patina is old and uniform. Signs of use, natural wear on the edges, and small imperfections in the wood all contribute fully to the piece’s charm.
A rare piece that combines the history of lace, traditional measurement systems, and Auvergne folk art.
