Antique Silvered Metal Chalice With Gilded Silver Cup. Spain C. 1920.

Antique liturgical chalice, possibly made in Spain during the first quarter of the 20th century, circa 1920. It is a piece with sober and well proportioned lines, very pleasant to the eye because of the contrast between the general silvered body and the warm gilding of the cup. That interplay of metals gives it presence without the need for overloaded ornamentation, and turns it into a clean, elegant chalice perfectly suitable both for the altar and for a religious silverwork collection.

The structure follows a classical model, with a circular foot of good diameter, stylized stem, simple central knop and bell-shaped cup. The base presents discreet but well executed engraved decoration, with a geometric border on the outer band and an upper ring ornamented with small repeated motifs that provide relief and visual rhythm. The stem maintains the same general sobriety of the whole, with soft mouldings and a knop that allows a good grip in the hand. The sub-cup incorporates an engraved border with undulating development, enough to enrich the piece without breaking its restrained character. The cup, gilded both inside and outside, provides the point of nobility expected in a chalice intended for liturgical use.

The cup is made of silver and the rest of the chalice is made in silvered metal. On the upper rim of the cup there are small punched hallmarks, which add interest to the piece. The general finish is very uniform, with good shine, without deformations and with a very careful presentation in all its parts.

The state of preservation is very good. No knocks, losses, visible repairs or serious wear that detract from the whole can be seen. The cup preserves its gilding well, and the rest of the chalice maintains a clean, balanced and fully functional appearance. It is in perfect condition for use and preservation, something especially valuable in an antique liturgical piece intended for real service in a chapel, oratory or parish.

A beautiful, balanced and very visually pleasing chalice, with that very successful combination between the silvered body and the gilded cup, which gives it greater presence on the altar. Furthermore, it is very well preserved and can be used perfectly from the very first day. For a chapel, an oratory or a parish that needs an antique chalice, simple and dignified.

It may be a very appropriate purchase for a priest or as an ordination gift, precisely because of its well proportioned size, its practical use and its clean and elegant appearance. It is not an overloaded chalice, but rather a serious, classical piece easy to incorporate into worship, with the added attraction of its gilded silver cup.

Measurements: Total height 22.5 cm (8.86 in), diameter of the cup 7.8 cm (3.07 in), diameter of the base 11 cm (4.33 in). Weight: 315 g. (11.11 oz.)
