Antique Silver Incense Boat. Trillo. Valencia, Spain, Circa 1870.

Magnificent silver incense boat, Valencia, Spain, circa 1870, an antique piece with a great deal of character and a truly attractive appearance from the very first glance, with an elegant silhouette. The elongated shape of the body, the hinged lid and the high foot give it a very striking presence, while the silver from which it is made reinforces its liturgical character and the interest of the piece within 19th century religious silverwork.

The entire surface is worked with rich and abundant decoration, based on scrolls, leaves and vegetal motifs full of movement. The relief runs across the body with grace and very good taste, giving the incense boat a worked, rich and highly decorative appearance. On the sides there are two especially beautiful and uncommon elements, a sun on one side and a moon on the other.

The lid is also very interesting. Its leaves follow the same decorative language, with scrollwork and well drawn curves that perfectly accompany the form of the incense boat. The upper finials are light, elegant and very pleasing to the eye. The foot and the base complete the whole very well, with reliefs that accompany the general decoration and finish the incense boat with a solid, harmonious and very attractive appearance.

On the side, it preserves the TRILLO hallmark, corresponding to the Valencian workshop of the Trillo family of silversmiths. The most reasonable attribution lies between Ventura Trillo y Díez and his son Andrés Trillo y Capilla. With this hallmark its manufacture can be placed in Valencia and within the chronological framework between 1851 and 1886. Dating it circa 1870 is completely reasonable, although it could be slightly earlier or slightly later.

As for the condition, it presents very good preservation and an excellent appearance for a liturgical incense boat of this period. The piece displays very well, opens correctly and maintains all the appeal of its silver workmanship. In general, it is a very interesting incense boat to complete a set with a thurible, for a sacred art collection or for anyone looking for an antique religious silver piece.
