Stained Glass - Stained Glass Windows - Saint Bernadette
Artist: Charles Champigneulle
This stained glass window depicts Saint Bernadette in front of the grotto, holding a rosary in her hands. In the distance, we can see the village of Lourde surrounded by mountains.
It is signed “Ch. Champigneulle – Paris 1931.”
The Champigneulle family has known several generations of master glassmakers. The first, Charles-François Champigneulle (1820-1882), took over Charles Maréchal’s stained glass workshop in Metz, then moved to Bar-le-Duc. One of his sons took over his workshop and another, Louis-Charles-Marie Champigneulle (1853-1905), founded a workshop in Paris.
This stained glass window of Saint Bernadette Soubirous was created by Jacques-Charles Champigneulle (1907-1955), a fourth generation of master glassmakers. The latter is surely the best known of the Champigneulles. He notably created the decor that adorned the first-class lounge of the ocean liner Normandie.
Colored glass painted with grisaille. Lead assembly. Original iron frame.
