Wood And Metal Snuffbox With A Bone Plate Featuring A Plowing Motif And Fine Mother-of-pearl Inlay, 19th Century
We present a curious snuffbox from the same collection.
It is particularly interesting because the lid features a sizable rectangular bone plaque onto which a metal relief depicting a plowing scene—with oxen, a plow, and a farmer holding the plowshare—has been applied.
The soil is represented by small pieces of mother-of-pearl.
At the bottom of the lid is an inscription reading “Comtoise Nickel” that I have been unable to identify.
Is this an advertisement for a company? Are the wooden borders made of nickel? I don’t know.
