It is decorated with a Yali, a mythical creature from Hindu mythology with the body of a lion and the tusks of an elephant. It is most commonly found in temples in southern India, particularly in the Tamil Nadu region. The substantial weight of this piece attests to the quality of the wood and its purpose as a decorative element for a building.
