India, Tamil Nadu region, 17th–18th century, a superb and unusual architectural element from a temple or a residence belonging to the upper castes. It is decorated with a Yali, a mythical creature from Hindu mythology with the body of a lion and the tusks of an elephant. It is most commonly found in temples in southern India, particularly in the Tamil Nadu region. The substantial weight of this piece attests to the quality of the wood and its purpose as a decorative element for a building.
Dimensions: Height 42 (cm).
The scale reference in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a well-known brand.
