Constant Dutilleux was admitted to the studio of painter Louis Hersent at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Dutilleux admired Eugène Delacroix, whose painting The Death of Sardanapalus he saw in 1827. He followed the master’s career and met him in 1847. He collected his works and those of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. He became friends with Corot, and beginning in 1851, Corot visited Arras regularly, while Dutilleux accompanied him to Holland and then to Fontainebleau, where he became a follower of the Barbizon School.
