France Late 15th Century: Sculpture Of Saint Mary Magdalene (h 89 Cm)
This large sculpture dates from the late 15th century.
It is undoubtedly a depiction of Mary Magdalene. Her missing hands would have held the alabastron, a perfume bottle containing pomade, which is her most frequent iconographic attribute.
She is represented here as a young and beautiful woman with a broad face, full cheeks, and a pensive gaze. She is dressed in a long, simple-necked gown and a cloak-like veil, a wide panel of which falls forward in deep, flowing folds.
The treatment of her hair is remarkable, gracefully wavy, very finely crafted, and ending in five very long strands at the back, making this sculpture very impressive.
In good condition considering its age, with the missing hands.
