Philippe Budelot was a student of the landscape painter Lazare Bruandet. The latter introduced him to the practice of plein air painting in the Paris region.

Like his master, his paintings combine meticulous naturalism in the depiction of the landscape with picturesque touches introduced by the figures that enliven his works. As is often the case in Romantic landscapes, the figures were painted in collaboration with other artists. He exhibited regularly at the Salons from 1793 to 1841.

He was appointed by Tsar Alexander I as director of the St. Petersburg porcelain manufactory.

He created another painting related to Russia, which was sold at Sotheby’s on May 26, 2004, under lot number 7, *Gardens of the Catherine Palace*. (21,500 euros including fees)

Located in the town of Pushkin (formerly Tsarskoye Selo), the Catherine Palace served as the summer residence of the Russian tsars for several years.
