Erckmann-Chatrian is the pen name used by these two writers from Lorraine: Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian. Erckmann was born in Phalsbourg, Chatrian in Abreschviller. The two writers collaborated from 1850 to 1885. In fact, after their joint collaboration, Erckmann wrote primarily novels while Chatrian focused on theater. Numerous black-and-white illustrations, both as inserts and in the text, by Théophile Schuler and Riou.
