19th Century Decorative Gilt Bronze And Black Marble Clock

A striking and highly decorative French Napoleon III mantel clock, dating from circa 1870, featuring a finely cast patinated metal figure of a young scholar or noble youth seated above the enamel dial. The figure is depicted holding a book and resting thoughtfully beside a scroll, an allegorical representation often associated with learning, literature, or the arts.

The clock is beautifully mounted on a stepped black marbel base richly adorned with elaborate gilt bronze mounts displaying scrolling foliage, classical ornamentation, and finely detailed rocaille-inspired decoration. The contrast between the deep black marble and the bright gilded bronze creates the dramatic and luxurious appearance so characteristic of the Napoleon III period.

The white enamel dial displays Roman numerals and is framed by a finely chased gilt bezel. The movement remains present inside the case; however, the pendulum, winding key, and rear glass access door are missing. For this reason, the clock has not been tested and is offered strictly as a decorative object. It is being sold in its current condition and should not be considered a functioning timepiece.

This elegant clock retains excellent decorative appeal and would make a beautiful addition to an antique interior, library, study, or collection of 19th-century French decorative arts.
