French School 19th Century, Misty Coastal Landscape, Oil On Paper,
French School, late 19th century
Seaside scene with two figures,
oil on paper
27 x 49 cm
In good condition
In a modern frame: 35 x 57 cm
A rocky shoreline beneath a laden sky — likely Atlantic in character, recalling the coasts of Brittany, Scotland or Ireland — with two silhouetted figures in the middle ground and dead branches strewn across the foreground. The muted palette of ochres, greens and greys, the diffuse light dissolving the mountains into haze, and the freely impasted handling are all consistent with the northern Romantic landscape tradition, pointing variously towards the British school (Cox, Leader) or the Hague School (Mesdag, Weissenbruch). Execution on paper suggests an open-air study.
