Set Of Six Longchamp Majolica Oyster Plates, France Circa 1890

Artist: Longchamp
This beautiful set of six French majolica oyster plates was produced by the renowned Faïencerie de Longchamp and dates to circa 1890. Designed for serving oysters in the elegant dining traditions of the late 19th-century, each plate features six shell-shaped wells arranged around a central circular reserve intended for lemon, sauce, or condiments.

The design is particularly striking, combining richly textured basket-weave grounds with a deep green glaze and naturalistic oyster shells highlighted in subtle shades of cream, grey-blue, and brown. The sculptural modeling and vibrant colors exemplify the artistry that made French majolica highly desirable during the Belle Époque period.

Founded in Burgundy in 1832, the Faïencerie de Longchamp became one of France’s most respected ceramic manufacturers. The company earned a reputation for producing finely crafted faience and majolica wares inspired by nature, including oyster services, game dishes, botanical tableware, and decorative ceramics. Today, Longchamp pieces are appreciated by collectors for their quality, creativity, and distinctive French character.

The underside of each plate bears the impressed LONGCHAMP mark along with model numbers, confirming the attribution. Beyond their original purpose, these plates make a wonderful decorative display and bring a touch of French coastal charm to any table setting or collection.

A highly decorative and collectible set, reflecting the refinement and craftsmanship of late 19th-century French majolica production.
