Journée Du Chrétien – Copy Bearing The Coats Of Arms Of The Godoy And Ruspoli Families – 1824
A fine copy of Journée du Chrétien, in-12°, a devotional work that was widely circulated in the early 19th century, bound in red morocco leather, decorated with small metalwork featuring gilded borders and frames.
Gilded edges.
Edition: Poitiers, published by Fr.-A. Barbier, Libraire-Imprimeur du Roi & de Monseigneur l’Évêque, 1824.
The two covers bear the coats of arms of the Godoy and Ruspoli families: in fact, in 1821, the marriage took place between Carlota de Godoy—grandniece of Philip V of Spain and Elizabeth Farnese—and Camillo Ruspoli, second son of Francesco Ruspoli, 3rd Prince of Cerveteri. The presence of these coats of arms gives the volume the character of a family heirloom.
Coats of arms:
-Godoy: lions and castles, a reference to the arms of Spain and the Bourbon ancestry.
-Ruspoli: Roman princely emblems, a crown, and Baroque motifs.
Condition: fair. The metal clasp is missing, and the binding shows signs of wear on the covers and spine, consistent with prolonged handling. The interior, however, is in excellent condition, with clean and well-preserved pages.
