Glazed Earthenware Jug With Handle; Flanders Or Netherlands? Late 16 To Early 17th Cty

Impressive and imposing glazed ochre earthenware pitcher with a single thick handle

Flanders / Netherlands,
Late 16th or early 17th century

Please check joined documentation for on a stoneware piece similar in shape to our model

The most surprising aspect here is the size of the pitcher, and its rather round / "plump" and massive shape: 24 cm tall and 20 cm in diameter with its handle / 16 cm without.

Note the potter’s thumbprint on the handle attachment, a poetic and discreet mark of ceramic creation.
The ochre-glazed section covers the upper part of the pitcher, both outside and inside.

The neck was accentuated during the potter’s wheel-throwing process with three lines of molding, as well as three similar ones on the middle section.
Traces of black glaze (or tar?) droplets on the body of the pitcher

The pitcher is in good condition (note, however, a slight crack in the neck, which does not go all the way through and does not weaken the pitcher at all), despite centuries of repeated daily use, thereby demonstrating its quality of craftsmanship and sturdiness. The flared foot made of darker terracotta, attached to the slip, ensures the pitcher greater stability.
