Large Marble Park Statue Of Amphitrite And Poseidon, Mythology, Garden Fountain, 17th Century
Artist: Ecole Italienne 17ème
Large marble park statue, Italian or french school, late 17th century.
This imposing sculpture would have been placed near a pond or at the center of a fountain.
It is in good condition, with a patina from outdoor exposure.
Mythological theme: Amphitrite and Poseidon, whose union heralds the constellation of the Dolphin.
Amphitrite is a sea nymph with whom Poseidon fell in love and whom he abducted. She fled, but was convinced by a dolphin that the God of the Seas was a decent person. As a reward, Poseidon placed the dolphin in the heavens, and the constellation of the Dolphin was born.
An exceptional piece due to its quality, its two-figure subject, and its size.
