Fountain on the Shore of a Mediterranean Port
Oil on canvas mounted on panel
227 x 162 cm
Claude Joseph was introduced to painting by his father, Antoine Vernet, and Adrien Manglard. He lived and further trained in Rome from 1734 to 1753, where he drew inspiration from the works of Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, and Giovanni Paolo Panini. During these twenty years in Rome, he created a new style of seascapes, characterized by port life and storms, with a decorative flair and a typically eighteenth-century elegance. In 1753 he was recalled to Paris where, by royal order, he executed the series of French seaports. A member of the Academy in Paris, he received several commissions from King Louis XV and, beginning in 1746, exhibited in various shows. The family tradition of painting would be carried on by his son Carle Vernet and his grandson Horace Vernet. His influence was fundamental for various artists, such as Charles François Grenier de Lacroix, known as Lacroix de Marseille, Pierre-Jacques Volaire, Francesco Fidanza, and Carlo Bonavia.
