"Kumattikal mask from South India, made of jackfruit wood. It probably represents King Mahabali. Kumattikal is a colorful masked dance from Kerala in southern India. During Onam, the Hindu festival held in August/September, Kumattikal dancers collect small gifts while entertaining the villagers. This celebrates the victory of Vamana, avatar of Vishnu, over the legendary king Mahabali. This king is associated with the Hindu god Shiva. On his forehead is theTripundra, three lines of white ash symbolizing Shiva dancing on the cremation on the field of cremation."
