Japanese Buddhist Travel Shrine

Japanese Buddhist travel shrine
Gold-lacquered wooden zushi shrine, adorned with a monk carved in wood
The shrine features a cylindrical black-lacquered wooden case, with a flat back and hinged double-door mechanism
The inner walls and multi-level lotus base are covered with a thick layer of gold lacquer (gold leaf) to reflect light onto the central figure, symbolizing the statuette's radiant aura
Miniature zushi shrines of this specific portable size were made so that devotees could travel in the company of their personal deity
Once closed, the shrine measures 6 cm wide, 4 cm deep and 15.5 cm high
Probably Edo, 18th/19th century
