Antique Damascened Brass Plate, Middle East, 1940–1960

A circular plate in damascened brass, richly decorated with geometric and floral motifs finely inlaid with light-colored metals.The composition is organized around a central star-shaped medallion, surrounded by six radiating cartouches featuring highly precise polygonal interlacing.The border features pseudo-Arabic calligraphy, not intended to be read but used as a decorative motif.This type of stylized script is typical of early 20th-century Syro-Egyptian productions, in which the letter becomes a true ornamental element.

The piece stands out for the quality of its chiseling, the regularity of its motifs, and the beautiful alternation of polished and textured surfaces, revealing a perfectly mastered craftsmanship.

Technique: damascening on brass, metal inlay (light alloys), engraving, chasing, and decorative hammering, all entirely by hand.

Origin: Islamic world, mid-20th century, most likely Syria.The star-shaped geometric motifs belong to the Syrian-Damascene tradition. The large 8-, 10-, or 12-pointed star medallions, combined with dense polygonal grids, are characteristic of the workshops of Damascus and, more generally, of Ottoman Syria. As are the very dense geometric patterns, the polygonal interlacing, and the perfectly symmetrical radiating medallions.

Condition: good overall condition, slight signs of use, some micro-wear consistent with its age. No impact marks or deformation.
