This work depicts an episode from the Massacre of the Innocents (Gospel according to St. Matthew, 2:16-18), when King Herod ordered the killing of the children of Bethlehem in order to eliminate the newborn Christ.In the center of the composition, a mother clutches her naked child while a powerful hand seizes the child's arm. The scene, captured in a moment of extreme tension, conveys with intensity the maternal despair in the face of impending violence.
