Antique Painting Of Saint Ignatius Of Loyola, 17th–18th Century
The painting depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), the Spanish theologian and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The saint is depicted with his traditional iconographic features: his characteristic bald head with a high forehead, dark beard, and the black habit typical of the religious order he founded. In the lower right corner, the monogram IHS is clearly visible, surmounted by a cross, which constitutes the trigram of Christ and the official symbol of the Jesuits. His gaze turned upward accentuates the spiritual, ascetic, and devotional aspect typical of sacred painting from the Counter-Reformation era
