19th-century Russian Travel Icon In The Form Of A Triptych
A portable Russian travel icon dating from the late 19th century. The work consists of three panels painted in egg tempera on a gold ground, enclosed within a sturdy, contemporary protective frame of embossed brass, featuring functional side hinges and a top clasp. This type of small folding altar was traditionally used by pilgrims, soldiers, and travelers for daily prayer during long journeys.
The interior iconography unfolds with descriptive finesse through three significant liturgical scenes, enriched by identifying inscriptions in Cyrillic script on the upper part.
Left panel: The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Center panel:
The Presentation of the Holy Cross
Right panel:
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
Length when open: 24.5 cm
The exterior front features a typical Orthodox cross
Condition as shown in photos
