Durrell moved to Sommières, in the south of France, between Montpellier and Nîmes, in 1957. He lived at "villa Louis[", chemin de Paillassonne, until September 1958, then at maset Michel on the outskirts of Nîmes, on the road to Uzès, until the summer of 1966. He finally returned to Sommières in 1966, moving into a middle-class residence with parkland, Maison Tartès, 15 route de Saussines.
