Portrait Of Caligula Emperor In Armour, Italy, 17th Century
The inscription at the top identifies the character
This painting is inspired by the series of 11 portraits of Roman Emperors painted by Titian for the Duke of Gonzaga between 1539 and 1539, which have now disappeared.
In 1561, Bernardino Campi produced a copy of Titian's paintings, then drew heavily on Titian's style to create his own series of 12 Emperors. He contributed to the spread of this style of portraiture, which still decorates Italian palaces and private cabinets today.
Seventeenth-century painting, unglazed but with old restorations; some holes, missing paint and wear.
