Jean Paulet - Ceramic Vase " The Sea"
Artist: Jean Paulet
"Les vagues"
Polished and angled earthenware vase by Jean Paulet
Jean Paulet (1931-2012) is a French ceramist renowned for his contribution to the revival of polished earthenware, a technique inspired by ancient Greek ceramics. Trained at the Fontcarrade ceramics school in Montpellier, he set up his own workshop in 1954 before moving to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. He uses local clays, which he prepares himself, and fires them over wood in a converted old bread oven. Going against the trends of his time, he favors polished rather than glazed surfaces, and develops a body of work in natural colors ranging from ochre to smoky black. His work is deeply linked to the earth and to Mediterranean craft traditions. He has influenced many ceramists, including Loul Combres
