Pair Of Tazza Centerpieces Gilt Bronze With Louis XVI Loves. Clodion
Pair of Clodion-style gilt bronze tazza cups / centerpieces, 19th century Parisian work
Each cup rests on an oval base richly decorated with foliate friezes, foliate scrolls and rocaille motifs. The children's figures, treated in patinated bronze, are depicted reclining in supple, graceful attitudes. One of the putti is holding a bunch of grapes, in a bacchic style evoking the harvest, the vine and abundance. The other is shown next to a basket containing chicks, a charming pastoral motif linked to spring, barnyard, fertility and domestic life.
The circular gilded bronze bowls are supported by an openwork structure formed of branches, flowers, leaves and foliage. The undersides of the trays feature finely engraved or guilloché radiating decoration. The ensemble plays on the refined contrast between the luminous gilding of the ornamental parts and the brown patina of the childlike figures.
These pieces can be used as centerpieces, decorative bowls or candleholders. They were formerly pierced to allow for electrification, a frequent transformation on this type of decorative object.
The model is in keeping with 19th-century Parisian decorative taste, nourished by 18th-century pastoral, bacchic and childlike compositions. The reference to Clodion is particularly relevant to the spirit of these putti: reclining children, a rural register, evocation of the vine, abundance and rustic pleasures.
Condition: good overall presentation. Minor wear to gilding and patina, light rubbing and traces of age. Old holes for electrification,See photos.
