Born in Brussels in 1921, Baron Pierre Courtens came from a line of painters famous in his country.
In 1942, he entered the Academie des Beaux-Arts in St. Josse-ten-Noode, with painter Jacques Naes as his teacher. He also studied monumental decorative art with Anto Carte, and took courses at the Académie Supérieure du Royaume de Belgique in Antwerp in etching and woodcuts.
He was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de St. Josse-ten-Noode, where his teacher was the painter Jacques Naes.
In 1947, Pierre Courtens settles in Montparnasse and frequents the artists Atlan, Dominguez, Zadkine, Mane Kate. He frequently rubs shoulders with Jacques Villon in Puteaux at
Camille Renault's.

.Until 1972, numerous one-man shows were held at Camille Renault's gallery in Paris or in his restaurant in Puteaux.
In 1971, he was President of the Jury at the Puteaux Exhibition.
Baron Pierre Courtens is notably famous for the portraits he made of Antonin
Artaud, whom he met in 1946. There are said to be around fifty portraits of Artaud painted or drawn by the artist worldwide.
