A renowned Belgian painter, Fernand Toussaint was one of the great portraitists of the Belle Époque. A student of Jean-François Portaels and then Alfred Stevens in Paris, he was particularly renowned for his portraits of women, imbued with elegance, poetry and refinement. His work, influenced by Impressionism and Art Nouveau, is now represented in several Belgian public collections.
