Prométhée Enchaine, Oil On Canvas, Late 18th Century

Prometheus in chains, oil on canvas from the late 18th century,
On the reverse a sketch whose down is taken from Roman history.
Very good condition.
Dimensions with frame 46x37 cm

This painting depicts the torment of Prometheus, a figure from Greek mythology. For having stolen the sacred fire from the gods in order to transmit it to mankind, the Titan was condemned by Zeus to be chained to a rock where an eagle came every day to devour his liver, in eternal torment.

The composition shows Prometheus bound by heavy chains at the wrists and ankles, while the raptor swoops down on him with violence. The hero's tormented body, the tension of the limbs and the intensity of expression convey the full tragic dimension of the subject. The luminous contrasts, the vigor of the drawing and the dramatic character, of the staging, particularly of the hero's hallucinated face, are in keeping with the Baroque aesthetic, where mythological subjects serve to exalt human passions.

On the reverse is a particularly interesting antique inscription:
"Legier
Fait le 25 avril 1790 à Paris"
This inscription provides an interesting insight into the history of the work, as well as a chronological landmark.
The energetic treatment of the flesh, the expressive power of the figure and the theatricality of the scene evoke the great mythological compositions developed in Northern Europe and Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. The subject of Prometheus, a symbol of knowledge, sacrifice and revolt against the established order, was particularly popular with enlightened enthusiasts.
The painting is presented in a 19th-century carved and gilded wooden frame.

The reverse also features a second scene with an antique subject, showing several figures, probably Romans, gathered around a brazier.
This composition, which appears to be a sketch, is dated 1790, giving us information on the subjects treated by the painter, well in the spirit of the times
The date on the reverse, April 25, 1790, places this work in the years of the French Revolution, a period during which themes derived from Antiquity and the heroic virtues of mythology were experiencing a revival of interest among artists and collectors.
