Alphonse BIRCK
Metz, 1859 - Paris, 1942
Portrait d'une Egyptienne du Caire
Aquarelle
42 x 37 cm (55 x 43 cm with frame)
Signed lower left, located and dated "A. Birck / Caire / 96"
Very good condition
Alphonse Birck was a Lorraine-born painter who became famous for his Orientalist works, particularly in Algeria.
Very precocious, Alphonse Birck exhibited at the Salon des artistes français as early as 1877 with a portrait of his father, but soon left to settle in Algeria. For him, "Algeria alone sums up the Orient". In the 1890s, he also traveled to Egypt, Palestine and Syria, painting oriental women in their daily lives, as well as landscapes in a light range, always very colorful and luminous. In particular, Alphonse Brick showed great talent as a portraitist.
Our painting is located in Le Cire and dated 1896. The model in this portrait has great personality. The eyes are piercing and we
feel the overwhelming heat of the country. The costume and jewelry are well detailed and very handsome too. Certainly one of
his finest portraits in his series of portraits of Oriental women in the 1890s.
