Silver Coin, Virgin Of The Rosary. Spanish School, 17th Century.
Silver coin, Virgin of the Rosary. Spanish school, 17th century.
Made of silver, this finial (intended for a reliquary, processional staff, etc.) depicts the Virgin Mary (standing on the head of a winged angel) holding the Child Jesus, crowned, who is himself holding a rosary. Both are surrounded by a halo of flat rays of varying lengths, surmounted by a Latin cross. Within this halo, a composition of small beads alternating with much larger beads (another rosary) is clearly visible. This Marian devotion originated after the miraculous apparition of Mary to St. Dominic in 1200, and has therefore been closely associated with the Dominicans from the outset.
Weight : 114 grams. - Dimensions: 9.5 x 0.5 x 11 cm
