England, Circa 1800.
Pair of large biscuit porcelainporcelain cookie.

Height 25 cm
Wedgwood's major innovation, jasper or Jasperware, developed around 1775 andtruly mastered by 1777.
He achieved the feat of obtaininga paste derived from basalt, but perfectly white, unglazed and suitable for polishingpolished by a lapidary. This new pebbled sandstone is brightened byby the addition of barium sulfate.
Furthermore, this fine stoneware can be tinted in the bodyin the body. Unlike earlier products, the color was not applied to the surfacebut integrated into the body itself. The aesthetic principle liesthe contrast between the colored background and the bas-reliefs.
The technical difficulty is considerable: you have to master the compatibility of the pastes, mold the bas-reliefs and then apply them, avoid distortion during firingand prevent color migration between layers.
