English Tortoiseshell And Mother-of-pearl Tea Caddy, Liverpool, 19th Century
Elegant 19th-century English tea caddy, with curved shape, entirely veneered in finely speckled brown tortoiseshell. It is richly decorated with delicate iridescent mother-of-pearl floral marquetry on all sides and the lid, fine ivory fillet, in the refined taste of Victorian productions.
The interior features two removable compartments with their lids also covered in tortoiseshell. The reverse of the lid is trimmed with its original red velvet. The box rests on four small ivory ball feet, bringing elegance and contrast to the whole.
Under the base, presence of an old label bearing the words "Liverpool", the rest of the inscription being difficult to read, suggesting an English provenance or a merchant from this port city renowned for its trade in the 19th century.
Nice display and collector's item, typical of English tea caddies designed to preserve tea, a product then precious and sought-after.
