Centerpiece In Marble And Gilded Bronze, France, Early 19th Century
Centerpiece in marble and gilded bronze, France, early 19thcentury
This particular centerpiece was made, in white marble and finely chiseled gilded bronze, in France between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. The refined architecture consists of a mixed base with a wavy profile in white marble resting on eight gilded bronze feet. The base simulates a portion of architecture with steps and balustrade made of openwork bronze and gilded. On it stand at both ends, on quadrangular bases in black Belgian marble, two columns decorated with gilded bronze elements. On their tops stand two curtains in gilded bronze of a canopy, which culminates with a large bronze brush and marble dome. At the center of the base and next to the columns stands the sculpture of a Roman soldier, dressed in armor and holding a sword extracted from the sheath. This sculptural group is very decorative and impressive. It can be placed as a centerpiece but also on a console, a dresser, or on a desk and bookcase. The brilliance of gold and the brightness of marble give the object preciousness and make it suitable for any type of furniture.
