The Apollo of Belvedere is a famous marble sculpture of classical antiquity, discovered in 1489. Today, the statue stands in a courtyard of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, as part of the Vatican Museums' antiquities collection. It is a Roman copy of a Greek bronze original dating from around 330-320 BC, designed by Leochares. The original copy probably dates from the time of Emperor Hadrian (117-138).Artist : unknownYear: 120s (Julian period)Location: Vatican MuseumsHeight: 224 cmPortal: Art and CultureThe 2.24-metre-high statue depicts the Greek god Apollo, just after slaying the dragon Python with bow and arrow. During Napoleon's Italian campaign, the statue, along with other works of art, was looted and taken to Paris, where it became part of the Louvre collections until 1815. After 1815, it returned to the Vatican.
