Student of Camille Flers, Louis-Nicolas Cabat made his debut at the Salon of 1833. A member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts de l'Institut de France in 1867, and became director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1879 to 1884.
