The edge of the tray, with its molded profile, is punctuated by six clasps with foliage. The chamfers of the moldings have an amatie finish, finely emphasizing the relief of the whole.
The swollen-base, shell-melted spout is adorned with fluting topped by a pearled frieze.
The handle, molded with fillets, ends in a spatula embellished with a staple medallion engraved with the monogram "JM".
-----
Hallmarks
- Master goldsmith's hallmark (crowned fleur-de-lys, two grains, J L, a bull's head) for Jean-Ange Loque, born in 1754, master in 1777, still active in 1806 [Nocq III, p.160];
- Poinçon de charge pour les menus ouvrages d'argent (Two interlaced Ls), Paris 1782-1789 [BP n°521];
- Jury hallmark (crowned letter P, dated 87; only one end of the crown is visible) used in Paris from July 11, 1787 to November 12, 1788 [BP n°538];
- Poinçon de décharge pour les menus ouvrages d'argent (A parrot's head), Paris 1786-1789 [BP n°524].

Charge, jurande and goldsmith's hallmarks on the reverse of the tray, on the rim, and in the binet. Discharge mark on the obverse of the tray, on the moulding. The handle is not hallmarked (or the hallmarks have disappeared).
Nineteenth-century control marks on the obverse of the platter, on the molding, very faded.

Works by Jean-Ange Loque are to be found in the finest collections. The ewer, basin and toilet boxes illustrated in the Nocq were part of the David-Weill collection, dispersed at Drouot in 1972 [David-Weill III, p.55, 17,000 FRF, the basin attributed to Thomas Roussin de Sens]. A pair of cruets dated 1784-1785 at the MET (48.187.10748.187.108), and another dated 1789 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs inParis [Mabille p.105].
A handle absolutely identical to ours can be found on a candlestick by Pierre-François Rigal, preserved in the Louvre (1775-1776).
