Kilim Barak - Anatolia. Circa 1950. 290 X 145cm
Barak kilims are unclassifiable. As far as I know, there are very few old pieces from this region of Antalya in southwest Anatolia. The oldest are from the early 20th century, but after the 1960s, this type of production went completely astray with the use of flashy, garish chemical dyes. However, the beauty and uniqueness of this type of piece lies in the choice and harmony of vegetal hues. It's simply amazing. On this one in particular, you're instantly seduced by the softness of the hues and the variations in intensity of each. This is what we call L'Abrash. It's a technique that involves using different tones of hue around a single color. This stylized effect can only be achieved with plant hues. During the wool-dyeing process, the weaver draws a certain quantity of wool from the beginning of the boiling process to the end. The result is a gradual gradation from lightest to darkest, with small balls being formed and hung on the top of the loom. During weaving, she then selects weft threads of varying intensity. Know-how, creativity and randomness.
A Barak kilim is one of the most recognizable. The use of motifs repeated over the surface, their oblique positioning and size are all distinctive features.
The Mother Goddess motif is omnipresent over the entire surface, evoking femininity. Can you see it?
The Baraks are extraordinary, touching us as much as they seduce us. Their graphics and highly decorative nature set them apart from the crowd.
By extension, I'd say that this Barak kilim is not a kilim, still less a carpet, nor are we dealers. It's a sensory universe, a vibrant surface full of subtlety.
