Born in Paris on November 11, 1904, Rodolphe Caillaux died in December 1989. He is particularly renowned for his paintings of landscapes, bullfighters and the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Working in oil or thick gouache, his style is characterized by great intensity, marked density and expressive force. His robust compositions, while remaining figurative, reflect a resolutely expressionist sensibility.
Biographical highlights:1928: Debuted at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, then exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, of which he became a member in 1957 and vice-president of the Salon des Indépendants. 1940: After his demobilization, he settled in Pau until 1946, painting numerous views of Béarn. That year, he presents Vue du Gave à Billère at the Salon d'Automne béarnais. 1948: Begins exhibiting annually in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. 1965: Participates in the Expressions 65 exhibition in Bayonne, where he presents Le Moulin Rouge and Place Blanche. 1968: Becomes president of the Salon Comparaisons, a position he will hold for fifteen years. 1969: Exhibits at the 78th Société des Amis des Arts de Pau. 1973: Creates the Maurice Ravel medal for the Monnaie de Paris. 1986: Winner of the Prix Puvis de Chavannes. 2003: The Uria Monzon gallery in Ciboure devotes an exhibition to his work.
