Pair Of Empire-period Solid Silver Torches Returning From Egypt By Jpn Bibron 1798
Pair of Empire period solid silver torches
Silversmith : Jean-Pierre-Nicolas Bibron
Punches : 1er Coq (Paris 1798-1809)
A magnificent pair of Empire-period solid silver (950/1000) torches by Parisian master goldsmith Jean-Pierre-Nicolas Bibron.
These torches feature extremely fine chasing and remarkable craftsmanship, typical of the finest Parisian goldsmiths of the First Empire.
The square-section shaft rises from a circular base richly decorated with a frieze of laurel leaves and flowers, underlined by a string of pearls.
The central decoration is particularly rare and sought-after: it features superb heads of women sculpted in high-relief, wearing antique-style headdresses and framed by grapefruit motifs.
This motif is emblematic of the "Retour d'Égypte" style, inspired by Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign and very much in vogue under the Consulate and Empire.
These highly elegant female faces are the highlight of this pair and are relatively rare on torches from this period. The bobèches (removable candle holders) are also solid silver and perfectly hallmarked.
Dimensions:
- Height: 28.5 cm each
- Weight: 334 g and 333 g (total net weight: 667 g)
Condition : Very good overall condition. A few rare traces of old wear, perfectly normal for pieces over 200 years old. One of the two torches shows a very slight lean (not serious and no impact on stability).
No restoration, no cracks, no repairs.
Hints:
- Master goldsmith: JPB (Jean-Pierre-Nicolas Bibron)
- Title hallmark: 1er Coq (Paris 1798-1809)
- Warranty and charge marks clearly visible on the bobèches and bases.
These torches, with their great purity of line and exceptional refinement, will make a masterpiece in a collection of Empire silverware or a neoclassical-style interior.
