Octavianus Monfort Turin 1646–1669, Tempera On Parchment
Parchment 30x26cm
Total 55x 49
Graneri Collection, Piedmont (according to the wax seal on the back);
European aristocratic collection, from the late 19th century.
This refined composition of flowers and fruit, characterized by tonal contrasts of pink, green, and blue, can be compared with two other works on parchment of the same subject, originally from the Royal Palace of Turin and now preserved in the Basilica of Superga, attributed alternately to Giovanna Garzoni or to Octavianus Monfort (see G. Casale, Giovanna Garzoni. ‘Insigne miniatrice’. 1600–1670, Rome 1991, pp. 190–191, nos. C 27, C 28).
The Piedmontese provenance of this painting is suggested by a wax seal depicting a coat of arms with a castle and sheaves of wheat, likely identifiable as that of the Marquises Graneri, as well as by the style of the frame, original to the work.
