Walnut Armchair, From Piedmont, Louis XVI Style, 1780
Walnut armchair, from Piedmont, Louis XVI style, 1780
Elegant Piedmontese Louis XVI-style walnut armchair, dating from around 1780, characterized by harmonious lines and a refined neoclassical design. The frame, of excellent craftsmanship, features a warm original patina that enhances the piece’s simple and balanced design.
The contoured backrest with its undulating profile connects with great elegance to the curved “horn-shaped” armrests—a distinctive feature of late 18th-century style—supported by slender, linear posts. The tapered truncated pyramid legs, finely fluted at the base, fully evoke the decorative vocabulary of the Louis XVI style.
The seat and upholstery have been subsequently reupholstered with striped fabric in warm shades of orange, pink, and ochre, in good overall condition and well-matched to the wooden frame. The piece retains remarkable proportional elegance and a pleasing balance between formal simplicity and comfort.
